Top Gun als Metapher über Coming Outs

Es gibt ja viele Filme die als Metaphern für Homosexualität gelten. Das berühmteste Beispiel dürfte Ben-Hur in der Version mit Charlton Heston sein. Der homosexuelle Subtext, der sich in der Beziehung Judah Ben-Hur und seinem Jugendfreund Messala abzeichnet war so offensichtlich, dass der Agent von Rock Hudson diesem empfahl die Titelrolle nicht anzunehmen.

Das lag vor allem an Gore Vidal, der das Script überarbeitete und die Bezeihung zwischen Ben-Hur und Messala ausarbeitete. In Rücksprache mit Regisseur William Wyler instruierte Vidal, selbst homosexuell, Stephen Boyd der Messala darstellte und erklärte ihm den niemals im Script erwähnten Subplot. Der homophobe Waffennarr Heston widersprach dieser Story vehement. Es ist schon komisch, dass so ein Typ in so tollen Filmen mitspielte und selbst wohl vermutlich ein Vollidiot war.

Ein weiterer legendärer Film mit einer versteckten Coming Out-Botschaft war der zweite Nightmare on Elm Street Film. Als ich über die ganzen Andeutungen und Referenzen las hab ich herzlichst gelacht, da alles sehr logisch aber gleichzeitig sehr weit hergeholt wirkte. So soll die Geschichte sich nämlich einzig um die sexuelle Identität des Haupdarstellers Jesse drehen.

Ich war dann ziemlich überrascht, als Drehbuchautor David Chaskin zugab, dass dies wirklich beasichtig gewesen war und der campy Subtext bewusst gewählt wurde. Auch Robert Englund sagte 2010 in einem Interview:

“The second Nightmare on Elm Street is obviously intended as a bisexual themed film. It was early ’80s, pre-AIDS paranoia. Jesse’s wrestling with whether to come out or not and his own sexual desires was manifested by Freddy. His friend is the object of his affection. That’s all there in that film.”

Und dann eben auch Top Gun, hier erklärt Quetin Tarantino warum Top Gun sich nur um Homosexualität dreht.

Der Ausschnitt ist aus dem Film “Sleep with Me – Liebe zu dritt” von 1994. Und es birgt einer gewissen Ironie, dass sich Tom Cruise immer wieder gegen Vorwürfe wehren muss, dass er eben schwul sei. Wobei ich das ähnlich wie bei Travolta, vollkommen egal finde. Weil das eben deren Sache ist. Sind Scientologen gegen Homosexualität oder warum wird den Vorzeigesternchen gerade das vorgehalten?

What about Kelly McGillis?

Kelly McGillis, she’s heterosexuality. She’s saying: no, no, no, no, no, no, go the normal way, play by the rules, go the normal way. They’re saying no, go the gay way, be the gay way, go for the gay way, all right? That is what’s going on throughout that whole movie…

He goes to her house, all right? It looks like they’re going to have sex, you know, they’re just kind of sitting back, he’s takin’ a shower and everything. They don’t have sex. He gets on the motorcycle, drives away. She’s like, “What the fuck, what the fuck is going on here?” Next scene, next scene you see her, she’s in the elevator, she is dressed like a guy. She’s got the cap on, she’s got the aviator glasses, she’s wearing the same jacket that the Iceman wears. She is, okay, this is how I gotta get this guy, this guy’s going towards the gay way, I gotta bring him back, I gotta bring him back from the gay way, so I’m do that through subterfuge, I’m gonna dress like a man. All right? That is how she approaches it.

Okay, now let me just ask you – I’m gonna digress for two seconds here. I met this girl Amy here, she’s like floating around here and everything. Now, she just got divorced, right?

All right, but the REAL ending of the movie is when they fight the MIGs at the end, all right? Because he has passed over into the gay way. They are this gay fighting fucking force, all right? And they’re beating the Russians, the gays are beating the Russians. And it’s over, and they fucking land, and Iceman’s been trying to get Maverick the entire time, and finally, he’s got him, all right? And what is the last fucking line that they have together? They’re all hugging and kissing and happy with each other, and Ice comes up to Maverick, and he says, “Man, you can ride my tail, anytime!” And what does Maverick say? “You can ride mine!” Swordfight! Swordfight! Fuckin’ A, man!
