Interessanter Artikel bei Quartz. Ausgehend von der Frage was Alt-Right eigentlich sein soll hat Tim Squirrell 3 Milliarden Reddit-Kommentare linguistisch analysiert. Für Squirrel sind Alt-Rights (bisher) keine einheitliche Gruppe:
“They’re a loose collection of people from disparate backgrounds who would never normally interact: bored teenagers, gamers, men’s rights activists, conspiracy theorists and, yes, white nationalists and neo-Nazis. But thanks to the internet, they’re beginning to form a cohesive group identity.”
Die einzelnen Persona stellt Squirrel dann vor und analysierte ihr Vokabular. Anhand dieser Daten untersuchte er ausgehend vom Trump-Fan-Subreddit “The_Donald” die Verbreitung auf Gesamt-Reddit. Seine Feststellung, tatsächlich eint Trump gewisse Menschengruppen, die sonst nichts miteinander zu tun hätten und außerhalb von “The_Donald” es auch weiterhin nicht haben.
“They remain separate when they’re outside of The_Donald, but the more time they spend in there, the more pernicious views of the world they are likely to pick up by osmosis. They are forming a coherent group identity, represented in the language they have begun to speak, which coalesces around their common hatred of liberalism and their love of Donald Trump.”
Und abschließend in Bezug auf Pepe The Frog, der großartige wie auch beängstigende Satz:
“We’re witnessing the radicalization of young white men through the medium of frog memes.”
